Welcome to Pack 1862

Our Cub Scout pack is an active and welcoming community for boys and girls in kindergarten through 5th grade, serving Cub Run ES, Deer Park ES, and the greater Centreville, Virginia area. We hold meetings at both Cub Run and Deer Park Elementary Schools and warmly welcome all scouts from the surrounding neighborhoods.

Pack 1862 is located in Centreville, Virginia. We meet at both Cub Run Elementary School and Deer Park Elementary School (and we welcome all scouts from the surrounding area).

Cub Scout annual fees are $280 for the first scout and $260 for each additional sibling. A detailed breakdown of these fees and how they support our program can be found in the “About” section.

Every household in our pack is required to volunteer in at least one position. Scouting is an adult-participatory activity and it’s enriching for you, for your scout(s), and for the unit to have everyone involved. We can’t do it without you!

We’re officially chartered by the Cub Run Elementary School PTA. We also have a close relationship with the Deer Park Elementary School PTA.

We offer all kinds of fun activities! From outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, and biking to games and exciting opportunities to explore STEAM: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. And no list of scouting activities would be complete without mentioning the iconic Pinewood Derby and Raingutter Regatta. Take a look at our events section to see more details.

Yes! Pack 1862 supports family scouting and both boys and girls are welcome and encouraged to join.

Scouting is based on grade level and each grade level is comprised of smaller units called dens. Pack 1862 has programs from kindergarten through 5th grade. Each scout is given a rank based on their grade level.

Dens and Ranks

Scouting is organized by grade level, so your child joins the den that matches their current school grade and works toward the rank that goes with it. Every rank is built the same way: six required adventures — covering character and leadership, the outdoors, personal fitness, citizenship, safety, and family and reverence — plus two electives the den or family picks.

Every scout also earns the Bobcat adventure at each rank, which covers the Scout Oath and Law, the Cub Scout sign, handshake and salute, and keeping yourself safe. It is the same idea each year, pitched a little older each time.

If your child is new to scouting, no problem at all — they can jump straight in. Earning the earlier ranks is not required to join a den.

Lion

Kindergarten
Lions are our youngest scouts. Each Lion has an adult partner who comes along to activities, and the den keeps things short, active, and fun. Six required adventures and two electives.

Tiger

1st grade
Tigers still have an adult partner alongside them for each activity, but they start taking the lead more often. Six required adventures and two electives.

Wolf

2nd grade
Wolves work with their den rather than a personal adult partner, and get their first real taste of doing things on their own. Six required adventures and two electives.

Bear

3rd grade
Bears take on more responsibility in the den and spend more time outdoors. Six required adventures and two electives.

Webelos

4th grade
Webelos — short for “WE’ll BE LOyal Scouts” — is where the program starts leaning toward Scouts BSA, with more camping and outdoor skills. Six required adventures and two electives.

5th grade
Arrow of Light is the highest rank in Cub Scouting and its own den for fifth graders, built around getting ready for a Scouts BSA troop. Six required adventures and two electives. It is also the only Cub Scout badge a scout keeps wearing on the Scouts BSA uniform.
